Great Yarmouth market official opening date revealed
Great Yarmouth’s £4.7m completed new market is to be officially opened later this month.
People in the town are being invited to the event on Wednesday, February 21 with a host of family fun and food-based activities taking place.
The event runs from 10.30am to 3pm.
A statement promoting the opening said: “We’ll have a free-to-enter children’s trail on offer to explore the market. Can you help them find all of the pictures?”
“The first 150 children to complete the trail can claim a Golden Ticket.”
“Exchange Golden Tickets for pick ‘n’ mix sweets at Unique Sweets.”
“At noon, On Your Market, Get Set, Cook! will be taking place with local chefs Mark Dixon and Peter Clarke, along with two contestants.”
“They’ll be asked to buy ingredients from the market and then whip up two courses in front of an audience, taste tested by the mayor of Great Yarmouth, Penny Carpenter but voted for by the audience.”
“We’ll also have entertainment organised by Freshly Greated and some food demos from our chefs throughout the day.”
The market development started in April 2021 and comprised two stages, with the first being opened last June.
Construction of the second phase of the multi-million pound Great Yarmouth market building was completed at the end of September.
When plans were unveiled in January 2020, the redevelopment was expected to take nine months to complete.
However, the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and later supply issues slowed progress.
Last September it was revealed that an inquiry is under way into the costs of the major project.
It follows a councillor’s claims it was due to a “£2.5m cost due to a lack of signing a contract”.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council confirmed the investigation is to probe the reasons behind the escalating costs of the project which it says has been caused by delays.
